Some Greyhound History
Given the vast amount of emphasis placed on greyhound racing, especially in modern-day Australia, it is interesting to look at the origins of the actual greyhounds and greyhound racing, which dates back thousands of years.
The first mention of greyhounds appears in ancient Egyptian history, depicted on the ancient tombs. The first known greyhound race harks back to medieval England, established exclusively for English nobility.
Modern-day greyhound track racing is first noted in 1919, when the first major greyhound race was held in California, already using the mechanical lure instead of the original hare or rabbit. The mechanical lure, as well as the first greyhound track race, is accredited to Owen Patrick Smith, who is generally seen as the founder of modern greyhound racing.
Betting on Greyhounds
In order to bet on greyhound races such as those held at Rockhampton, sports bettors will need to find a sportsbooks or bookmaker. These are usually physically present at the actual greyhound meetings, which makes things a little easier for bettors. However, bettors can also choose to place their bets online at greyhound betting sites or telephonically.
The aim of greyhound betting is to beat the oddsmaker, that is, the person who actually sets the betting odds. If bettors achieve this, then they can win some money. Bets are usually placed on particular greyhounds, the outcome of a particular race, the outcome of a series, or the outcome of a Cup, though this will vary depending on the race and location.
There are many different types of bets that can be placed, and bettors will need to fully examine their odds and what is available to them before placing their bets. One of the most popular bets is the straight bet, also known as a single bet or win bet. Here bettors will simply place a bet on who they think will win the race. This is also placed at a given odd, and players will win the bet if their chosen greyhound is the one that finishes the race first.
Novice bettors are encouraged to stick to straight bets until they have learned the ins and outs of greyhound racing and betting on greyhound racing, at which point they may choose to move on to slightly more complicated bets.
